This black pine with branches extending in a square shape can be considered a gigantic bonsai. It is 600 years old and the branches reach 28 meters east to west and 32 meters north to south, currently the largest foliage area of any tree in Japan. The name Yogo signifies a coming together by chance of all gods and buddhas which is expressed in our age through this majestic shape conveying the awesome dignity of the divinities. Although the tree has appeared to be in a declining condition in recent years, fresh shoots are now sprouting. In 2011 it was designated a Natural Monument by the government of Japan.
