白川郷の家屋では障子紙に和紙が使われています。昔は近くの河合村(現飛騨市河合町)などで山中和紙が生産されていました。
　窓に和紙を用いることで、部屋に差し込む光は柔らかくなります。また冬のライトアップで見られるように外から見るほんのりした窓明かりが日本の原風景にとてもなじみます。
　Japanese paper called Washi is used to make paper sliding doors in Shirakawa-go. In the past, Sanchu washi was produced in the nearby village of Kawai (present day Kawai Town, Hida City)
　The sunlight shining in to the room becomes soft when using Washi on the windows. Furthermore, as you can see in the photo of the winter illuminations, the faintly lit windows adapt magnificently to the surrounding Japanese landscape.
