今も、河合村ではおよそ800年前から伝わる伝統的な山中和紙の名称で和紙が造られています。この山中和紙は、楮(コウゾ、紙の原料になる木)の皮とトロロアオイというともに天然の素材から作られます。さらに楮の皮を漂白するために、冬の雪の上でさらして作るという特徴があります。この方法は酸化漂白であり、紙が空気に触れても酸化しません。また紙の繊維が長くて自然のままであるため、丈夫でいつまでも白い状態が保たれます。山中和紙の名称は、飛騨の山深い地域で盛んに作られていたことから名付けられたと言われています。
　

　In Kawai Village, one traditional Japanese washi paper product, Sanchu Washi, has been produced there for approximately 800 years. This Sanchu Washi is made of natural materials, such as the bark of the Kozo (a variety of mulberry grown as a raw material for paper manufacture) and Aibika called Tororo aoi in Japanese. In order to make the bark of the Kozo white, it is left exposed on the winter snow. This is oxidative bleaching, which means that even if the paper touches the air it will not oxidize. Furthermore, because the fibers retain their naturally long state, it will remain strong and white forever. The name of Sanchu Washi is said to have come from the fact that it was made in the mountains (san = mountain, chu = in the middle) of Hida.
