合掌家屋の周りには、池や用水があります。これは冬に降る雪を捨て、溶かすために役立つほか、防火用水、鯉などを育てることにも使われています。
　There are ponds and drains around Gassho-style houses. This is where snow is thrown to melt during the winter months. It is also used as water to extinguish fires, and to raise carp.
　

　冬には雪が深く、強い北風を和らげるため家の北側には防風のための樹木が植えられています。
　白川郷の多くの家屋は南北向きの谷に平行に立てられています。これは風の影響を少なくし、太陽光が東西の屋根に均等に照射する効果があり、冬の積雪対策に役立っています。上右図の右端に見える直線道路は、ほぼ南北に走っており、手前が北です。
　It snows heavily in winter, and as strong northerlies blow, windbreaks are planted on the north side of the houses.
　Many houses in Shirakawa-go are built parallel to valleys facing north and south. Also, as sunlight shines equally on the east and west sides, it will help counter-measure the effects of accumulated snow. The straight road as seen in the right top corner of the top right picture runs almost north-south, with the foreground of the picture being north.

　白川村は県内でも有数の豪雪地帯です。そのため、冬の白川郷は白一色の美しい風景となります。
　Shirakawa Village is one place in Gifu Prefecture famous for its heavy snowfall. Therefore, everything in Shirakawa-go turns to a beautiful white in winter.

　冬の白川村は白一色に染められます。そのため、夜に村全体を光で照らしだすと幻想的な美しい風景を見ることができます。ライトアップは1月下旬から2月上旬に和田家ほかの家々で行われ、人気のイベントになっています。
　Shirakawa Village in winter is full of white colors. Therefore, when the whole village is lit up at night, you can see a fantastically idyllic winter landscape. Shirakawa-go, including the Wada house, organizes special illumination events on selected days from the end of January to the beginning of February. It attracts many visitors.
