Trivia【Beautiful, glistening red roof tiles】
There are many houses with red roof tiles in Saijo Basin. It is a rare sight even in Japan. Why do they use red roof tiles?
These tiles originally came from Shimane Prefecture 160 years ago. They were very strong and convenient for farmers who used to change thatched roofs every year. Moreover, the soil in Saijo Basin was clay suited to making strong tiles that are resistant to cold weather. Tiles were also kiln-fired at over 1,000 degrees to make them less water-absorbent. Red roof tiles thus spread quickly among people.
Today, red roof tiles are produced by roof tile manufacturers in Takaya Cho. Let’s continue to protect the beautiful scenery of red roof tiles.
