Sakakiyamahachiman Shrine

Sakakiyamahachiman Shrine is located on a small hill overlooking the sea in Akitsu. Within the precincts, there is a bronze statue of Senzaburo Miura, who laid the foundation for sake production in Hiroshima. Matsuo Shrine, which enshrines the god of sake, is also located nearby. Both shrines are deeply related to the production of sake.

Trivia【Disappearing island (Hoboro Island)】
Hoboro Island on the sea of AkitsuThis island has grown visibly smaller over the past few decades. It used to be gourd-shaped and over 20 m long. Today, only two or three rocks can be seen at high tide. This is because of Nanatsubakotsubumushi (sphaeroma sieboldii), insects about 1 cm long. 10 million of them live on the island’s rocks and make holes. The island is expected to disappear under the sea in about 100 years.
