Description	The Memorial Service for the A-bomb Victims of Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima First Middle School ("Hiroshima Icchu") is held every year at the end of July in front of the Monument for Remembrance at Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima Kokutaiji High School ("Hiroshima Kokutaiji-ko"). The monument was erected in 1948 by the Bereaved Families Association of the Atomic Bomb Victims of Hiroshima First Middle School and alumni and the memorial service began in the same year. The current large-scale memorial service is attended by more than 1,000 people including the families of the students who died in the atomic bombing, classmates from that time, alumni association members, Hiroshima Kokutaiji High School faculty and staff, as well as current students of the school from their classrooms through a live broadcast. Hiroshima First Middle School, one of the most prestigious schools in the prefecture, suffered tremendous damage with more than 369 people killed including teachers, staff, and students who were engaged in the demolition of buildings or gathered inside the school. In 1954 the Bereaved Families Association of the Atomic Bomb Victims of Hiroshima First Middle School published a book titled Tsuioku (Recollections) that contains the lamentations of the bereaved families. However, many of the bereaved families were unable to write due to the emotional pain of losing their own children and only about a quarter of the families submitted memoirs. Later, a collection of memoirs based on this book, Hoshi wa Miteiru (Stars Are Watching) was published and became widely known to the public.
