“Keio Builds the Foundation of Rugby”
In “The 60-Year History of Keio University”, Fukuzo Ando takes us back to the beginning of rugby at Keio where there were many difficulties, relating as follows: “Our rugby club was started with the name of Barbarian Football Club, with a number of volunteers including Fujio Yamazaki, Masao Matsuoka, Shigero Ito, Seizo Hamada, Ryuzo Inokuma, Shiro Suzuki, Kazuhito Ogura, Kenzaburo Okamoto, and Ichinosuke Okamoto. Then another team called Shikishima Club also combined with us to form our club.” According to him, Shikishima Football Club had ruggers such as Junichiro (later Heihachiro) Kaieda, Kuraji Kitada, Yoshio Yoshitake, and Fukunaga. The exact year this took place is not clearly indicated here, but they seem to have worked hard on building up their team in Sendaigahara.
