“Keio's First Victory over YC&AC”
At the 11th match, Keio finally, for the first time, won a sweeping victory over YC&AC. This victory shows us how they successfully developed their rugby tactics in this game. The following quotes are from the opening portion of “Sven System and First Victory”, authored by Kumazo Tanabe who appeared in this game as CTB. “In the spring of 1908, Professor Clarke who worked for Kyoto University at that time sent a book entitled “Complete Rugby Football” authored by David Gallaher, the captain of the New Zealand expedition tour team. This book explained and discussed this team's seven system in detail, especially focusing on the scrum based on the seven system. [...] I won't conclude that the seven system naturally brought about Keio's victory. But Keio cultivated great confidence in their scientific techniques that they acquired through such a book while making rapid strides in rugby skills. Such confidence greatly contributed to their victory. YC&AC must have faced the defense line around the seven system's scrum totally for the first time, losing their chance for offense.” (Source: “The 60-Year History of Keio University”)
