“Waseda University Forms a Rugby Team”
The Waseda University Rugby Football Club was formed on 7 November 1918. See Chapter 1 “History” for the details about how this club was formed, written by Seii Inoue who was the founder as well as the first captain.
Daisan High School periodically came to Tokyo to meet Keio. Asking Daisan to have a match, Waseda met Daisan at the Waseda Totsuka field on 7 January 1919, while biting the dust 15-0. At this commemorative first match for the Waseda University Rugby Football Club, all the club players appeared at the match wearing maroon-and-white horizontal-striped jerseys (2.5 Japanese yen per pair at that time). After this match, Waseda was invited to another match with YC∾ however, they canceled a visit to Yokohama due to rain. But the team members later became humbled by a letter delivered to Waseda from YC&AC saying that rugby should be played even in the rain.
“2nd Japan Football Tournament (Toyonaka)”
On 18, 19, and 26 January 1919, the 2nd Japan Football Tournament was held under the auspices of Osaka Mainichi Shimbun. The following six teams appeared in this tournament: Keio, Kyoto, Doshisha, Daisan, Kyoto Daiichi Commercial, and Doshisha Junior High School. However, since Keio and Kyoto withdrew from the semifinals, Daisan defeated Doshisha Junior Highs School 24-0, claiming the tournament title.
