“Our rugby club was born in the spring of 1923. Those rugby lovers and volunteers in other sports clubs, such as baseball, track and field, association football (soccer), Sumo, Judo, and Kendo, gathered to launch a new rugby club for the university.” (Source: “The History of the Kansai Rugby Football Union”)
“Various Universities in Kanto Form Rugby Clubs”
Ikusaburo Hayakawa, who played football (soccer) at Rikkyo University, was invited by his older brother, Soichiro, a graduate of Kyoto University where he had played rugby, to watch the 1st Waseda-Keio Rivalry. This was followed by other schools forming rugby clubs, such as Daiichi High School, Tokyo Higher Normal School (the present University of Tsukuba), Seikei High School, and Kansai University in Kansai.
