“Establishment of the Seibu (present Kansai) Rugby Football Union”
The Seibu Rugby Football Union was established on 6 January 1926, and Teiichi Sugimoto was recommended as the board director. The Kansai Rugby Football Club served as the base for establishing this Seibu Rugby Football Union. The name “Seibu” was given to this union because it covered not only the Kansai area, but also Kyushu and Korea. The Seibu Rugby Football Union was renamed to the Kansai Rugby Football Union in 1947, when the Kyushu Rugby Football Union was established. For east-west matches, the name “Kansai” was continued to be used. (Source: “The History of Japanese Rugby”)

The Japan Rugby Championship Sponsored by the Seibu Rugby Football Union
“An irregular schedule was planned for the east-west match due to Keio's Shanghai tour. Therefore, the Seibu Rugby Football Union decided to hold the east-west match between the Kanto's champion, Keio, and the Kansai's champion, Doshisha, as the Japan Rugby Championship.” (Source: “The 100-Year History of Keio University”)
