[JRFU] The IRB Conference held in Paris in March 1985 passed the proposal made by the Australian Rugby Union Association to hold the Rugby World Cup (RWC) with 16 nations in New Zealand and Australia for the first time in 1987.

* The Ireland national team came to Japan for the first time. The Japan team performed well, but not well enough and lost in two consecutive test matches.
* The Japan team toured France for the second time and lost completely 50-0 and 52-0 in the test matches.
[Japan Rugby Championship] The 23rd Japan Rugby Championship ended with a storm. Keio, which tied Meiji 12-12 in the final match of All-Japan University Rugby Championship, played in the Japan Rugby Championship by lot and beat the company champion Toyota 18-13 becoming the Japanese champion for the first time.
[University] In the 22nd All-Japan University Rugby Championship, Meiji and Keio did not give in and tied 12-12. Both became the champion. Keio proceeded to the Japan Rugby Championship by lottery. In the 56th Kanto Inter-University Rugby Tournament, Meiji claimed their 16th tournament title and for the first time in six years. In the 19th Kanto University Rugby League, Nippon University had seven wins and one loss claiming their third league title and for the first time in eight years. In the 57th Kansai University Rugby League, a fresh newcomer Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences claimed the league title for the first time. In the 4th Kyushu Championship, Fukuoka Institute of Technology beat Kumamoto 44−6.
[Company] In the 38th Japan Company Rugby Football Championship, TOYOTA beat Kobe Steel 12−3 claiming their third championship title and for the first time in eight years.
[International] In June, Nippon Steel Kamaishi toured New Zealand with three wins and two losses. In October, the Randwick Club from Australia came to Japan with two wins. In February, Kobe Steel toured the United Kingdom with one loss; however, the planned matches were canceled because of the extremely cold weather that made the field ground frozen. In February, Daito Bunka toured Chinese Taipei with three wins and one loss. In March, the New Zealand Manawatu state team came to Japan with three wins. The last match was canceled because of heavy snow. In March 1986, the Japan U18 national team toured abroad for the 11th time to Ireland with four wins and one loss.
