* The International Rugby Board (IRB) held the 1st Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, inviting 16 nations from all over the world. The Japan national team participated with the lineup with head coach Katsumi Miyaji and captain Toshiyuki Hayashi, and lost to the United States, England and Australia, being knocked out in the qualifying group. It was regrettable that the Japan national team repeatedly failed to make easy goals against the United States and finally lost by a score of 21-18. The first world champion was the New Zealand All Blacks.
* The Ireland national student team came to Japan with four wins and one loss. The Japan national team lost 24-12; however, All-Waseda won easily by a score of 16−15 in the first much to fight back.

[Japan Rugby Championship] In the 25th Japan Rugby Championship, Waseda beat Toshiba Fuchu 22−16 getting the championship title back to students again, becoming the champion for the fourth time and the first time in 16 years.
[University] In the 24th All-Japan University Rugby Championship, Waseda beat Doshisha 19−10 claiming their ninth championship title and for the first time in 11 years. In the 58th Kanto Inter-University Rugby Tournament, Waseda won all their nine matches claiming their 24th tournament title and for the first time in five years. In the 21st Kanto University Rugby League, Daito Bunka won all their eight matches and claimed their third league title for two years in a row. In the 59th Kansai University Rugby League, although Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences was defeated by Doshisha 10-6, on goal differential, Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences claimed their second league title and for the first time in two years. In the 7th Kyushu Championship, Fukuoka beat National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya 30−3.

In the Toshiba Fuchu team, Yasunobu Sato, Satoshi Ishikawa and Shogo Mukai played actively centering around captain Nobuaki Hanaoka under head coach Kenji Nakamura. It was the memorable first title for them that they could claim since they participated in the 29th championship for the first time. Sanyo Tokyo in Kanto, TOYOTA in Kansai, and Kyushu Electric Power and Mazda in West Japan claimed the titles. In the 28th Kanto Company Rugby Football League, Sanyo Tokyo (renamed from Tokyo Sanyo) beat Suntory 15−13 claiming their 10th championship title and for the first time in three years. In the 30th Kansai Company Rugby Football A League, TOYOTA had seven wins without any losses claiming their 11th league title and for the first time in two years.
