[National Team] The Japan national team led by John Kirwan got off a new start toward the 7th Rugby World Cup 2011 (New Zealand). The goal was to advance to the quarterfinals. After winning all of their matches in the Asian Five-Nation Tournament, the Japan national team almost got a win against the Classic All Blacks 15-13 in a strengthening match, but finished with one win and four losses in the Pacific Nations Cup. With a new lineup in the autumn, Takashi Kikutani was appointed as the captain. In November, the Japan national team won consecutive matches against the United States national team that came to Japan, showing the possibilities for a leap forward.

* In the IRB Pacific Nations Cup 2008 (the 3rd), the Japan national team had one win and four losses.

[Japan Rugby Championship] In the 46th Japan Rugby Championship, the Sanyo Electric Wild Nights beat Suntory Sungoliath 24−16 claiming their second title for the second time for two years in a row.
[Top League] In the 6th Top League, Toshiba Brave Lupus was placed first having 12 wins and 1 loss with 59 points. In the final of the Microsoft Cup, they also beat the Sanyo Electric Wild Nights 17−6 and claimed the title.
[University] In the 45th All-Japan University Rugby Championship, Waseda defended the title by beating Teikyo 20−10 and claimed their 15th championship title for two years in a row. In the 79th Kanto Inter-University Rugby Tournament, Teikyo claimed the title for the first time with six wins and one draw. In the 42nd Kanto University Rugby League, Tokai won all their seven matches claiming their consecutive titles. In the 80th Kansai University Rugby League, once-strong Kansei Gakuin claimed their eight league title and for the first time in 51 years, with six wins and one loss. In Kyushu, Fukuoka University and Fukuoka Institute of Technology tied 36−36 in the final. However, Fukuoka University proceeded to the All-Japan University Rugby Championship since the number of successful tries was 6-5.
[Sevens Rugby] In March, the 5th Rugby World Cup Sevens (Dubai) was held. The Japan national sevens team had three losses in the qualifying round. They also lost to Uruguay 19-12 in the first match of the bowl tournament.
[Women's Rugby] In the Asian qualifying round of the 6th Women's RWC (Suphanburi, Thailand) held in June, the Japan women's national team lost to Kazakhstan in the final and was eliminated. In March, the Japan women's national team participated in the 5th Rugby World Cup Sevens (Dubai), but had three losses in the qualifying round, then lost to China 21-5 in the first match of the bowl tournament.
[International] In the Junior Rugby World Championship held in June, the Japan U20 national team had one win and four losses finishing in 15th place. In June, the Kanto team toured New Zealand with two wins and one draw. In July, the France university selection team came to Japan and won against Waseda 27−0, but they lost to the Japan selection team 20-19. In July, the France U18 national team came to Japan and won three matches.  For the 11th UK-Japan University Matches, the Oxford-Cambridge combined team came to Japan. (One win and one loss) In March 2009, the Japan U18 national team toured abroad for the 34th time to England with three losses.
