In the 3rd minute of the first half, Japan gained possession of the ball from the scrum awarded to Australia, and launched a fast attack. Natsui managed to get the ball rolling after the punt by Miyai. Japan successfully scored an opening goal, putting the score at 5-0. Australia was quick to counterattack. In the 5th minute, the ball was passed from Roos to Tooth, Dawes, Bollyn and Phelps, who scored a try. In the 18th minute, Australia attacked the blindside from a lineout. Dawes returned the ball to Bollyn, which led to another successful try and a goal to shift the game to 5-8. In the 7th minute of the second half, the ball was passed from Roos to Tooth, Hill, and Richardson, who scored a try. In the 15th minute, Hill received a pass from a third quarter player, and another try and goal was awarded to Australia. In the 29th minute, Thornett scored a try and extended the lead to 5-19. All Japan could do in turn was to add Arai's penalty in the 35th minute. Japan lost two test matches in a row, 8-19.
