In the 3rd minute of the first half, Japan gained possession of the ball from the scrum awarded to Australia, and launched a fast attack. Natsui managed to get the ball rolling after the punt by Miyai. Japan successfully scored an opening goal, putting the score at 5-0. Australia was quick to counterattack. In the 5th minute, the ball was passed from Roos to Tooth, Dawes, Bollyn and Phelps, who scored a try. In the 18th minute, Australia attacked the blindside from a lineout. Dawes returned the ball to Bollyn, which led to another successful try and a goal to shift the game to 5-8. In the 7th minute of the second half, the ball was passed from Roos to Tooth, Hill, and Richardson, who scored a try.
