Japan showed a fighting spirit from the beginning: scrums had been an area of concern, but Japan gained possession of the ball from most of the scrums awarded to them. They were also rucking hard, living up to the name of the national team, and showed a neck-and-neck match in the first half. They scored two tries in the first half (the 2nd and the 6th minute) and went ahead 16-3. Japan stirred up the opponent: Miyai joined the line-out and made a dash. Hibino also darted to the goal-line, but was blocked by the All Blacks' robust back-up. In the first half, Watanabe kicked a penalty in the 22nd minute. In the 26th minute, Taniguchi intercepted a pass from a three-quarter player and kicked the ball to the in-goal area, and Tsuchiya chased it and jumped in to score the first try for Japan.
