In April 1963, Japan Rugby Football Union took the team on a tour to Canada for the first time since the end of the war. Although Japan lost to Vancouver 5-39, it achieved solid results of four wins and one loss including the officially recognised test match against the BC state team. Tatsuya Aoi, who was the captain of the tour, recalls the delightful moment as follows: “All members of the team embraced each other in joy, crying ‘We won! Well done, team!' The memories of the hardships we went through as well as our exhaustion were taken away. We were on the brink of happy tears. We earned this victory with our tackling and our forwards' hard work. Ishizuka, in particular, fought bravely despite injury. The weather and the ground conditions were good, but what we had better than the game on the 6th was our forcefulness, stamina, and luck. It all comes down to willpower. I made myself really believe that nothing but winning matters.”
