This game proved that Japan's good fight in the New Zealand Tour was not just luck. Although it was disappointing that they could not break through NZU's defence and scored no tries, Japan's defence was also good and conceded only four tries, 16 points.
Japan got off to an ideal start. Yamaguchi kicked a penalty between left and centre to be the first on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. They also held back NZU's breath-takingly fierce attack. The most notable was a desperate tackle to stop New Zealand's consecutive dash near to the goal in the 27th minute. However, NZU scored a come-from-behind try after consecutive possession in the 31st minute. In the 3rd minute of the second half, NZU scored another try. Japan's Yamaguchi managed to score a penalty in the 18th minute, but 10-6 was as close as they could get. NZU scored tries in the 21st and 34th minute to seal the win.
