It is rare for the world of rugby that Newspapers collectively reproach the ‘rough stuff throughout the game' (Yomiuri Shimbun), and ‘continuous punching and kicking' (Asahi Shimbun). The way the Colts played today was not acceptable. I made an arrangement with general coach Onishi so that we could talk to tour director Debnam and coach Furness prior to the second game and request fair play.
Although the game left a sour aftertaste, it was a relief that Japan won it. Japan was the first on the scoreboard with Yamaguchi's penalties in the 6th and 10th minute of the first half. Japan conceded a try from a lineout (and a conversion) to level the score in the 18th minute. Yokoi weaved his way through from scrum, and Mizutani scored a try (and a conversion) in the 25th minute. Izawa jumped in from a lineout and scored a try (and a conversion) in the 38th minute. In the second half, Japan passed the ball to the left from a scrum in the 14th minute. The ball was passed from Izawa to Murata to score a try (and a conversion). Japan conceded 16 points to the Colts but managed to win narrowly by two points.
