People were curious to see how Japan would play as they had beaten the NZ Junior team in the previous tour, so Japan was received warmly everywhere they went. For Japan, it was too good a game to lose. In the 28th minute of the second half, Ito darted from a ruck, Izawa supported him and jumped in between right and centre, Japan led NZU 31-28. It was a feel-good move, but after this, NZU' brought out their most powerful strategy: the forwards' onrush. NZU opened up to the left from lineout, and tried to the centre of the goal-line in the 30th minute. The whirlpool wearing black swept off the red and white jerseys as they proceeded, and scored another try. All the tries that the Universities scored in this match were built on the forwards' vertical dash like this. Trailing by nine points, Aruga and Fujiwara approached the goal but could not reach it. However, Japan fought well overall.
