Former coach Tetsunosuke Onishi commented in the official journal as follows: 82-6, this devastating defeat is reality. While both the Waseda and Kinki combined team and Japan B scored more than 30 points, and the latter even scored a try, Japan's national squad was smashed in two games. This reminds me of how the team played when Oxford and Cambridge came. We had reviewed the losses in those days, and were supposed to have been improving steadily on the basis of our reflection. So as a starting point, we searched for the causes of this defeat and, and came up with the following five causes: (1) disorganised defensive structure, (2) continuous deployment attack being forgotten, (3) defeat in mauls and rucks, (4) the backs being spoiled, and (5) lack of stamina.
