Japan played well against Italy whose forwards were powerful, but the only points they scored were Ueyama's penalty. They conceded five tries and lost the match. Seeing the way Japan's XV play with everything they had against the opponents, who were heavier by 20kg on average, moved the hearts of the spectators. It was simply impossible to ask for more. We were made aware of difference in ability. Coach Saito said: “Our true ability was brought to light by playing with the world. I didn't think Italy was this strong. We put our whole soul into the game and lost it, so it is nothing but the difference in ability. We need to develop a grand long-term plan for radical improvement, otherwise we will never be able to beat a top world-class country.”
