Although it was a slim victory, Oxford was so pleased to achieve their goal of defeating Japan, that the team ushered captain Brian to the dressing room on a teammate's shoulder. In the17th minute of the second half, Matsuo ran through the opponents and Yoshida scored a try, Japan led 16-10. Oxford scored a try in the 32nd minute to narrow the margin to two points, and scored another try and a goal in the 36th minute to turn the game around, 16-20. Japan lost the lead in the last 10 minutes once again. The news about this match was that flanker Saito was awarded a cap for the first time at the age of 35.
