The cause of Japan's defeat was their bad start. England, who had an uphill battle in the first test match, changed their way of attacking: the forwards made a dash to break Japan's formation, and the backs were deployed afterwards. They concentrated on keeping possession especially in the first half and gave Japan no chance of attack. Japan scored nil in the first half, trailing the opponent by 23 points. It seemed to be leading to another crushing defeat, but Japanese players turned defiant and attacked hard and England, having a comfortable margin, lost their sharpness a little. In the 11th minute of the second half, Matsuo intercepted and scored a try (and a conversion). Although England added two tries, two goals, and one penalty, Japan kept mounting a counterattack. Matsuo scored a try in the 35th minute, Tanifuji burst through from the scrum and deployed, and Minamikawa scored a try in the 37th minute. Matsuo scored a try in the 39th minute from an attack by both the forwards and the backs together. Japan scored four tries in total and saved their honour.
