Japan equalised the match 25-25. What contributed to this good game was that Japan won clearly in scrum. NZU was on the backfoot in the scrum as never before. In the 38th minute of the second half, Japan, trailing 19-25, was awarded a scrum at the 10 metre mark between right and centre. Japan, predominating in the scrum, pushed particularly hard in the third scrum at the 5 metre mark from the goal as if to respond to cheers from the spectators. Number 8 Sejimo grounded the ball in the in-goal area to tie the game. “I warned the team about Japan's try from the scrum, but my worry was confirmed. This indicates how strong Japan is. Every Japanese team we have played against so far was great. They are getting better each year. They will soon be able to win a match against an English team,” said the tour director of New Zealand.
