The point differential that 10,000 spectators with experienced eyes expected was at least 50. They had supreme confidence in their own team who would be heading out on a South African tour in a week, and waited calmly for Japan to thrash around and “bathe in blood”, so to speak. However, the stadium filled with such spectators ended up booing France and applauding Japan for working their tails off and fighting back with brilliant tackling. The chairman of the French rugby union commented after the match, “Japan gives everything they have. We saw many plays seemingly stretching their limits and going beyond their capacity. We would like to learn to play like that soon.”
