Japan conceded three tries to NZU in the first half, but Honjo scored two penalties. Also in the 13th minute, Tanifuji and Honjo ran by themselves for 50 metres after a successful pre-arranged play, and Japan scored a try to narrow the margin to 10-14. In the second half, Japan conceded one try and one penalty but launched a counterattack without a flinch. In the 22nd minute, the ball was passed from Toshima to Kawachi, then to Kanaya, and Japan scored a try. Honjo added a conversion, 16-21. In the 25th minute, Toshima was tackled and the ball was turned over. NZU scored a try (and a conversion). NZU scored two more tries after that. Toshima scored a try in the 37th minute but it could not turn the game around. Japan lost, 20-35. “We tried our best but still made mistakes which caused us to give away 35 points. When so many points were conceded, we had no chance of winning no matter who the opponent was. We are always bursting with vigour, but we still cannot keep our concentration for 80 minutes,” said coach Hibino.
