Three nations games were held between Japan, ES (English student rep team) and NZU (New Zealand Universities). For this test match I told the backs to apply shallow out (a method to go forward quickly and cover from the outside) for defence. I also told stand-off Matsuo to defend the second line when the opponent's fullback joined the line. However, ES's fast-moving large-sized fullback as tall as 191cm stormed to the wide and shallow position every time. Matsuo could not reach the defence line, and was cleared through so many times. Japan became unsure of its defence strategy, and lost without being able to adjust it. The team was not well-coordinated in attack, either. Japan, with dispirited play, could do nothing, conceded eight tries, and scored none.
