Japan got completely swept up by “Champagne rugby”. They could do nothing against the overwhelming power and speed that “the strongest French team ever” had. “I was utterly lost. I didn't know what to do,” said hooker Fujita bewildered. He was the one who received a pass from Oyagi and stormed into the goal-line while dragging two large men in the match against Wales last autumn. Even he had no idea how to contain them today. Coach Hibino made a similar comment pensively: “We had a chance to go head-to-head with France only when we could bring out our best in playing as intended …but we couldn't do anything today.” Japan XV was aiming not to concede more than three tries. They believed the only way to achieve it was with their killer tackles, and their determination to give everything they have. However, they conceded the important third try as early as the 25th minute of the first half. All three tries involved some mistakes.
