Japan conceded no tries to the United States in this North American tour, but was sadly brought into a draw.
“Nippon, gambare (Try hard, Japan)!” “Come on, Eagles!” 5,000 spectators (the biggest crowd in this tour) were split into halves, one cheering in Japanese, the other in English. Onuki kicked a short-punt and ran full tilt to the right corner of the goal-line, but when he was tackled down just before the line, the whistle went for no side. Under the scorching California sun, the Eagles stirred Japan up by thoroughly attacking the forwards. Japan persistently tackled the dashing bulky players, and never let them get through the goal-line. At only 172m and 70kg and on the small side of the team, centre Kutsuki knocked the opponent down on his back three times. “Tackling is the only way,” the words from Kutsuki say a lot about this good fight.
