Japan made a good start in the qualifier for the World Cup. In the 7th minute of the first half, when Japan pushed the scrum in front of the goal, Tonga's front row was penalised for breaking the scrum. Japan was awarded a penalty try for this. Japan's fullback Hosokawa precisely scored penalties throughout this game to shed a light on the team suffering from absence of a goal kicker. Tonga's forwards repeated powerful vertical attacks, but Japan's quick defence and fierce tackling successfully prevented them. The backs also outperformed Tonga with quick moves, and caused them to commit infringements so that Hosokawa could score the penalty.
In the second half, Japan had consecutive possessions and got into Tonga's territory, deployed wide to the left. Yoshida, who received a flying pass, jumped into the left corner. The number of tries was two for us and one for the opponent. The six penalties Hosokawa scored at the most effective moments helped Japan take a big step forward for a seat in the RWC.
