Western Samoa is a strong contender for the final eight in the World Cup. Japan could take a full swing at this match because they had already secured their seat in the RWC. However, they were hit against the thick wall of Samoa. Hirao stayed away from the match in order to rest his injured left shoulder. Instead, Fujita served as the game captain.
Japan struggled against powerful Samoan forwards, conceded six tries, and was roundly defeated. They ended the first half 4-25, with four tries for West Samoa. However, despite the fear that Japan might slide into a crushing defeat, they pulled themselves together in the second half, and put up a good fight scoring one try while conceding two, 7-12 for this half. This is where Japan has improved. Japan created a “format to score a try” in which Yoshida scored on consecutive possessions. With this, he actually scored a try in six consecutive test matches. Japan finished second in the Asia-Pacific region, and qualified for the World Cup. If they can beat either of the two giants, Scotland or Ireland, then we might be able to advance to the finals after defeating Zimbabwe.
