Japan's fullback Maeda, who won the first cap in this game, opened the scoring with a penalty 90 seconds from the start, 3-0, but the U.S. scored a penalty shortly after, too. The U.S. also scored a try from a high punt by stand-off Dejean while Japan was struggling to get their rhythm. Maeda scored two more penalties to make it 9-9, but missed the next one. The U.S. instead scored two penalties to take the lead before the break. The unrelenting U.S. forward scored two tries directly from lineouts in the second half. Japan could not play their rugby, but wing Yoshida attacked the blindside from the scrum in their own territory and scored a try, but that was as far as it went.
