The first game of the World Cup for Shukuzawa and his XV was against the host country. Scotland got fired up and brought out their real strength. Japan challenged them with fierce determination, but was defeated so easily. Japan's points in the first half came from a drop goal by Hosokawa and a try from a scrum using successful pre-arranged play. They played neck and neck and stood 9-17 at the break. However, they went on the defensive in the second half, used up all their energy there, and were roundly defeated 9-47. Scotland's forwards were as powerful as expected. Japan could do nothing against their logical offence: moving forwards with vertical attacks and passing the ball to the backs.
