Zimbabwe is not a weak team, but they might not have been used to fast-paced rugby. They completely gave in to Japan and let them run around as they pleased in the second half.
The first half, 4 min: Hosokawa opened the scoring with a penalty. 20 min: Horikoshi scored a try (and conversion) by attacking the scrum from the side. 30 min: Yoshida scored a try with the pre-arranged left 8-9 play from the scrum. Hosokawa added another penalty goal. Japan conceded only one try to Zimbabwe. Japan led 16-4 at the break. Japan stirred up Zimbabwe and Matsuo scored a try in the 10th minute of the second half. Zimbabwe was overwhelmed, lost their will to fight and conceded six more tries to Japan. Japan won their first victory in the World Cup.
“I thought it would be a close game. I was surprised to see the backs make their way so easily. The team made some mistakes at first because their desire to win got ahead of them. However, they were able to make consecutive attacks as much as they wanted,” said Shukuzawa. Japan recorded the memorable first victory in the World Cup.
