Japan won a tight game against Canada, lost to the United States, which had lost two games so far, at the end. Each participant of the Pacific Rim Championship is close or almost equal in ability, so concentration can mean the difference between winning and losing. Japan was leading by four points (12-8) in the 27th minute of the second half when the U.S. forwards pushed the scrum hard as soon as scrum-half Murata threw the ball in. The U.S. scrum-half attacked the side and stand-off scored a try. Japan outshot the U.S. by 7 points in the first half, but could not score any points in the second half. Coach Hirao reflected on this match as follows: “They advanced across the gain line so easily. Once that happens, it is extremely difficult to gain the next possession. It showed the difference in ability.”
