Japan started off brilliantly with flanker Gordon's try in the 2nd minute, and wing Masuho's try to the centre of the goal (Hirose added a conversion) in the 5th minute to give the team a 12-0 lead. Canada fought back: They overwhelmed Japan in the scrum, and scored five tries in total starting with centre Brian in the 9th minute. Japan's centre Motoki, and wing Ohata, who replaced Masuho, scored tries, but could not catch up with Canada and they lost by 25-34.
Seiji Hirao, coach of Japan, said that “We were attacked between plays and could not seize opportunities. We could show our toughness, but there are still a lot to improve. We will look into the problems exposed at the Pacific Rim Championship, and reinforce the team for the qualifier for the World Cup this autumn.”
