Japan lost to Fiji without scoring a try, but they also conceded only one try. If we can keep playing appropriately for a test match like today, we will not have to be ashamed of ourselves when playing against any world-leading team. Japan took the lead in the 7th minute of the first half with a penalty by Hirose. However, Fiji's fullback ran untackled for 50 metres and scored a try in the 9th minute. Both teams scored a few penalties after that. Japan could not return a try and lost to Fiji by seven points. Japan was pressured and could not get the rhythm. Every time they launched an attack, they were stopped by Fiji's tenacious defence. They lost every opportunity to attack and lost the match. That one try, which was deployed to the outside from the opponent's territory, was conceded easily and decided the outcome of the game. Hirose missed four penalties though he is usually good at kicking. Captain McCormick regretted that they “should have been more flexible in the offence”.
