Japan won the United States in their home country and claimed the first title with five wins and one loss. The two countries fought over tries (the number of tries: 6-4). Scrum-half Murata pulled a fast-paced attack and Japan picked up their pace. Stand-off Hirose, who served as a kicker, contributed to this win by scoring four goals and three penalties. Wings Masuho and Ohata scored five tries of the six scored as a team. This indicates that Japan has successfully established the style of rugby they were aiming for. Japan quickly deployed consecutive possessions and Masuho scored three tries in a row in the 22nd, 30th, and 38th minute of the first half. They conceded only two tries to the U.S. to make it 27-17 at the break. In the second half, Ohata scored a try from consecutive possessions in the 7th minute. After another try for Japan was scored in the 24th minute, Ohata also scored a try from consecutive possessions in the extra time. They conceded only two tries in this half, and won by 47-31.
