Japan played a send-off test match for the World Cup with Spain which will also be in the World Cup. The number of tries was 3-1 and appropriate for a test match, but it turned out more as a game that Japan “should” win, possibly because Spain was not in tip-top condition. Japan was first on the scoreboard: Ohata scored a try and Hirose added a conversion in the 14th minute of the first half. Hirose added penalties in the 22nd and 35th minute to make it 13-0 at the break. Hirose scored a penalty also in the 6th minute of the second half. Watanabe scored a try from a ruck in the 10th minute. Matsuda got away from the scrum and ran, and Masuho scored a try to make it 30-0 in the 14th minute. It was a one-sided game in the end. Japan has been achieving solid results since the Pacific Rim Championship in spring, and now the hopes for the World Cup are high for them.
