Samoa was different on the real stage of the World Cup. Japan had five former All Blacks, including Joseph and Bachop, in the starting lineup, but they could not do anything in the face of Samoa, one of the world's top eight. Japan scored only three penalties (all by Hirose) and was roundly defeated.
In the 23rd minute of the first half, Samoa took the ball dropped from a lineout in Japan's territory, and scored a try. In the 30th minute, Japan made a mistake in their kicking and conceded the second try to Samoa. The score stayed at 9-21 halfway through the second half, but in the 19th minute, Samoa added an insurance try. Japan could not stop Samoa's fierce attack near the end of the match, either. They conceded a try in the 39th and 42nd minutes to widen the gap even more.
