The test match against Russia was held as a send-off game for the Asia region qualifier for the fifth RWC. Japan scored seven tries with their fast-paced attack, and won easily to prove the effectiveness of their smooth reinforcement.
It was a good match that showed how organised the team was. Russia wasn't necessarily an easy opponent, but Japan displayed their third row's power to break through the pack, as well as the ability of the backs. They showed their true value in the 6th minute of the second half when number 8 Saito burst through, and Ohata scored a try with a loop and skip pass from the ruck. It must have pleased the spectators, too. A challenge they should address to is that they conceded three tries from mauls when pressured in the scrum by opponents of large build.
