The first Super Powers Cup was to be held among Japan, the United States, Russia, and China, but China was forced to withdraw due to the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak. So it was played as a competition among the three nations. Japan lost to the United States 27-69 with the number of tries 4-11. Japan is bad at handling powerful vertical attacks by the U.S., but they must overcome this if they are to make a leap to world level. The problem is, needless to say, the defence. They conceded as many as 11 tries in this game. Their offence is good. When a team scores four tries and 27 points in a match, the team should be able to win the game or at least make it a close game. In that sense, too, the defence remain an area for improvement in order to have an international presence.
