In the first match of the 5th World Cup, Japan put up such a good fight that Scotland got flustered, but that was as far as Japan could get. Scotland scored three tries from the 25th minute of the game and stretched their lead. However, it became a thrilling game because Japan conceded only five tries. The spectators in Townsville went wild with excitement, and later became good supporters of Japan. This was the best game Japan has ever played in the five World Cups. Ito, Onozawa and Ohata actively used their speed in offence. The try Onozawa scored in the 15th minute of the second half was a difficult kind of play used to disrupt the opponent in modern day rugby with a developed systematic defence. As for the defence, Japan's stepping-forward tackling invited the opponent to make mistakes.
