Japan put up good games against Scotland and France and came under the spotlight, but was completely defeated by Fiji. It is not an easy task for any team to challenge an opponent so much superior to themselves for 80 minutes. Players of such a match would not be able to move for a couple of days because of sore joints. Japan had to play against Fiji on four days' rest. They were caught by Fiji's individual tricks, and slowed down as if they were a completely different team in the second half. Reinforcing their fitness so that they can endure in these situations is a challenge Japan must face. Fiji matched Japan's one-on-one defence which worked well against the Europeans with the “offload pass” where the ball carrier passes the ball while pushing his body to the tackler. No matter how many tackles Japan gave, Fiji kept possession by passing the ball that way. Finally Japan conceded a try in the 19th minute of the first half. After this, Japan's defensive line slowly receded against Fiji's vertical onrush.
