The second Super Powers Cup was held as a tournament between Japan, the United States, Canada, and Russia. Japan won the first match against Russia 29-12, and advanced to the finals. The two scored two tries each, but Japan's five penalties by scrum-half Ikeda contributed to this win.
Coach Hagimoto commented before the match that “the match against Russia depends on the defence. The first person should go under, step forward and keep pressuring the opponent.” The team responded to the coach's honest determination to win the first match. Russia took a 3-5 lead in the16th minute of the first half as Japan was overwhelmed by Russia's power, but once scrum-half Ikeda scored a come-from-behind penalty, Japan extended the lead with wing Onozawa's try to achieve the first win under coach Hagimoto.
