Japan defeated Canada in the final of the second Super Powers Cup and won the title. Hagimoto started off on a good note as a coach. Stand-off Kyohei Morita (the third year student of Hosei University), who won the first cap in this match, performed well.
Japan formed a maul from a lineout in the 26th minute of the second half. Vatuvei got out. Morita jumped onto the ball, rolled out of the ruck and scored a come-from-behind try. In the 31st minute, Japan deployed from a ruck in front of the goal, and Ohata scored a try to the centre to extend the lead. Japan scored four tries in total including ones by Miuchi and Ohigashi. They did not let Canada score a try after the two tries in the first half, and won the game and the title. Coach Mitsutake Hagimoto said that “Morita did a great job. His kicks as well as the accuracy and speed of the pass brought out the good moves of the back line. I believe this victory made us overcome one barrier.”
