Although Japan had been playing fair and square under coach Hagimoto, they conceded 100 points to Scotland and damaged the international reputation of Japan. The IRB had been requesting that top teams have friendly matches despite their tight international schedule in order to boost the level of Tier 2, but the effort was wiped out. Japan was criticised because they brought a different team from the one played in Townsville (Australia). Only four players (Miuchi, Kiso, Okubo and Motoki) of the entire team were in the national squad when Japan gave Scotland a hard time in the World Cup. Japan was accused of being disrespectful for “coming to try out young players”. There was no excuse for Japan after its defence conceded 15 tries to the opponent.
