The Super Powers Cup 2005 was held as the Four Nations Tournament between Japan, Canada, the United States, and Romania. Japan beat Romania, whom they lost to in the European tour, to advance to the final. The scoring was 23-16, with 2 and 1 tries respectively. This close score was a winning pattern for Japan, and also indicates that it was a quality match.
In the 35th minute of the second half, when the score was 16-16, Japan's fullback Goromaru, who was just in the game as a replacement, made a dash in a counterattack. Japan had consecutive possessions, and finally, a returning pass from Onozawa to Ohata successfully made it through and Japan scored a come-from-behind try. Joyous howls from the fans echoed in the National Stadium for the first time in a while. This try is in a way a fruit of the French style technique of finding an empty space and keeping the ball alive which the Japanese had been coached to do. “We wanted to restore confidence in rugby by winning this game,” said coach Hagimoto, pleased with the come-from-behind victory.
